Thodupuzha, 07 Jan (H.S.):Veteran Kerala Congress leader and sitting MLA P.J. Joseph is set to once again contest the upcoming Kerala Assembly elections from the Thodupuzha constituency as the United Democratic Front (UDF) candidate. Party sources confirmed that the leadership has reached a broad consensus on Joseph’s candidature, and an official announcement is expected shortly.

Although the name of his son, Apu John Joseph—who currently serves as the Kerala Congress state coordinator—was also under consideration, the party leadership has expressed a clear preference for P.J. Joseph to continue representing the constituency. Senior leaders believe that Joseph’s vast experience, personal rapport with voters, and proven electoral track record make him the strongest choice for Thodupuzha at this crucial juncture.

P.J. Joseph has contested from Thodupuzha on 11 occasions so far and has emerged victorious in 10 of those elections, making him one of the most successful and enduring political figures in the region. Responding to speculation about his health and political future, Apu John Joseph clarified that there are no health-related concerns affecting his father. He also stated that there is no need for further debate within the party regarding the candidature, as the leadership is united behind Joseph.

Party insiders point out that the Kerala Congress’ strong performance in the recent local body elections across Idukki, Kottayam, and Pathanamthitta districts has further strengthened Joseph’s prospects. His active involvement in the campaign, including direct outreach and on-ground leadership in several constituencies, is seen as a major factor behind the party’s improved showing.

With the UDF keen to consolidate its base in central Kerala, Joseph’s candidature is being viewed as a strategic move aimed at ensuring stability, continuity, and voter confidence in Thodupuzha. Once officially announced, the campaign is expected to gain momentum, with Joseph once again taking centre stage in what promises to be a closely watched electoral contest.
