Thiruvananthapuram, 07 Jan (H.S.): A strengthening low-pressure system over the Bay of Bengal is likely to intensify into a depression in the coming hours, raising the possibility of widespread rainfall across Kerala on Friday and Saturday, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD).

The system, described as the first low-pressure formation of the new year, has developed over the southeast Bay of Bengal and the adjoining equatorial Indian Ocean. Weather observations indicate that it has already intensified into a well-marked low-pressure area and is expected to gain further strength.

The IMD said the system is likely to move in a west–northwest direction over the next 48 hours. While it is not expected to make a direct landfall over Kerala, its influence, combined with other prevailing weather systems, is likely to enhance rainfall activity across the state.

Adding to the unstable weather conditions, a cyclonic circulation is present over the Kanyakumari sea region, while another cyclonic circulation persists over the central-east Arabian Sea and the Lakshadweep region. The interaction of these systems is expected to increase moisture inflow towards Kerala, creating favourable conditions for rain.

As a result, isolated spells of heavy rainfall are likely on Saturday, particularly over interior and hilly districts. As a precautionary measure, the IMD has issued a Yellow Alert for Pathanamthitta and Idukki districts, advising residents to remain vigilant.

According to meteorological definitions, heavy rainfall refers to precipitation ranging between 64.5 mm and 115.5 mm within a 24-hour period. Such rainfall could lead to waterlogging in low-lying areas, localised flooding, and an increased risk of landslides in vulnerable hill regions.

The public, especially those living in landslide-prone areas and near riverbanks, has been advised to exercise caution and closely follow official weather updates over the next few days.
