Sribhumi (Assam), 31 January (HS): A major road accident occurred on Saturday morning on a national highway in Assam’s Sribhumi district, where a dumper truck collided head-on with a passenger traveller vehicle in the Srigauri area. Several passengers travelling in the traveller sustained serious injuries, with the condition of some reported to be critical.
According to eyewitnesses, the impact of the collision was so severe that the traveller driver lost control of the vehicle, causing it to veer off the highway and overturn. Panic broke out among the passengers following the accident and several people suffered grievous injuries due to the vehicle overturning. A few passengers were also trapped inside the vehicle.
On receiving information, local police and emergency services rushed to the spot. With the help of local residents, the injured were rescued and immediately shifted to nearby hospitals. Passengers with critical injuries were later referred to higher medical centres for advanced treatment.
Following the accident, traffic movement on the affected stretch of the national highway was temporarily suspended. Emergency services worked to remove the damaged vehicles and clear the road, after which traffic was gradually restored.
Police officials stated that the exact cause of the accident is under investigation. Preliminary findings suggest overspeeding or negligence as possible reasons, though the situation will be clear only after the completion of the probe.----------
