Thiruvananthapuram, 31 Jan (H.S):
A shocking incident of violence against the police was reported from Thiruvananthapuram, where a Sub-Inspector was allegedly assaulted by a fellow police constable, his relative, and a group of local residents following a temple festival. The incident took place late on Friday late night at Nagaroor, raising serious concerns over indiscipline within the force and public hostility towards law-enforcement officials.
The victim, Nagaroor Sub-Inspector Anzar, was on duty to maintain law and order during a temple festival in the area. According to police sources, a musical performance (ganamela) was being held as part of the festivities when a group of men, allegedly under the influence of alcohol, began creating a disturbance. Among them was Chandu, a Civil Police Officer (CPO) attached to the Pallikkal police station.
As the situation escalated, the on-duty police team intervened and removed Chandu and others from the venue to prevent further disruption. The immediate situation was brought under control, and the event concluded without further incident.
However, tensions flared again after the programme ended. Later that night, Chandu, his brother, and a group of local residents allegedly regrouped and launched a retaliatory attack on the police personnel who had earlier intervened. During the assault, Sub-Inspector Anzar was reportedly pushed into a roadside drainage canal, causing him to sustain injuries.
Police personnel rushed to the spot and managed to bring the situation under control. Anzar was given medical attention for his injuries, which are reported to be non-life-threatening. Acting swiftly, the police took Chandu, his brother, and another individual into custody from the scene itself.
A case has been registered against the accused for assaulting a public servant and obstructing a police officer in the discharge of official duties. Senior police officials have taken note of the incident, and a departmental inquiry against the involved police constable is also expected, given the gravity of the allegations.
The incident has sparked concern within police circles, as attacks on law-enforcement personnel—especially involving members of the force itself—are seen as a serious breach of discipline and public trust. Authorities have assured strict action against all those responsible, irrespective of their position, and reiterated that violence against police officers performing their duty will not be tolerated.
