Rescue mission launched for two people missing in sea off Withernsea

Withernsea, 03 January (H.S.): Humberside Police confirmed Friday evening that a second body had been retrieved from treacherous North Sea waters off Withernsea's central promenade, following the 3:10 p.m. GMT recovery—and on-scene death—of a 67-year-old unconscious man, as a massive multi-agency hunt persists for a third individual amid horrendous conditions of 9.8-foot (3-metre) waves, biting windchill, and recent snowfall.

Circumstances surrounding the fatalities—initially reported as several people in difficulty, possibly linked to a teen swept by a large wave—are deemed non-suspicious, with elevated policing enduring to aid ~100 rescuers combing the blackout-shrouded shore.

HM Coastguard orchestrated the operation—triggered Friday afternoon—from Humber base, deploying Withernsea/Hull teams, fixed-wing spotter plane, rescue chopper beaming spotlights till 9 p.m., plus RNLI inshore/all-weather lifeboats from Withernsea, Bridlington, Hornsea Inshore Rescue's unlaunchable rig (waves battering slipway), Yorkshire Ambulance/air ambulance, Humberside Fire/Police.

Hornsea's crew raced 4x4/casualty specialists sans boat; resident Darrin Stevens described wall-to-wall flashing lights blanketing beach, freezing gale rendering sea not a good place.

Holderness MP Graham Stuart termed it terrible news, prayers with affected; no identities/public peril disclosed, probe ongoing sans foul play.

Withernsea's shingle strand—prone to rip currents, winter swells—sees seasonal perils, buoyed by RNLI/HMCG vigilance.
