Kollam,14 Jan (H.S.):A low-pathogenic strain of avian influenza has been confirmed at a poultry hatchery in Kollam district of Kerala, prompting the authorities to intensify disease surveillance across multiple local bodies. The infection was detected at a layer chicken hatchery located in Thottathara, Ayoor, where the H9N2 strain of bird flu—known for its low virulence and limited spread—was identified.
Samples collected from the hatchery were tested at the National High Security Animal Disease Diagnostic Laboratory (NHSADL) in Bhopal, which confirmed the presence of the H9N2 avian influenza virus. Veterinary experts have clarified that this strain does not pose a risk of transmission to humans and has not shown signs of severe disease or rapid spread among poultry.
Following the confirmation, health and veterinary authorities expanded surveillance measures to 16 surrounding panchayats to prevent any possible escalation. Enhanced monitoring will be carried out in Elamadu panchayat, where the hatchery is located, along with nearby panchayats including Ittiva, Idamulakkal, Kalluvathukkal, Ummannoor, Kadakkal, Veliyam, Velinalloor, Vettikkavala, Chadayamangalam, Nilamel, Pooyappally, Anchal, and Alayamon. Surveillance has also been strengthened in Madavoor and Pallikkal panchayats, which lie along the Thiruvananthapuram district border.
District Animal Husbandry Officer Dr. D. Shine Kumar said that precautionary biosecurity measures are being reinforced at other poultry facilities in the region. These include the Kureepuzha Turkey Farm and the Kuriyottumala Hi-Tech Farm, where strict safety protocols, inspections, and controlled access measures will be implemented.
Authorities have advised poultry farmers to remain alert, strictly follow biosecurity guidelines, and immediately report any unusual symptoms or unexplained bird deaths. The public has been reassured that there is no cause for concern, as the situation remains under control and is being closely monitored by the Animal Husbandry Department.
