Kathmandu, September 5 (HS): Acting on a government directive, all mobile operators and internet service providers across Nepal have blocked access to major social media platforms that are not officially registered in the country.
Following Thursday’s order, 26 platforms—including Facebook, Messenger, WhatsApp, Twitter, YouTube, and Instagram—were taken offline. The Internet Service Providers Association of Nepal and telecom companies separately confirmed the nationwide suspension in compliance with the government’s decision.
Meanwhile, the Ministry of Information and Communications spokesperson, Gajendra Thakur, stated that Meta, the parent company of Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp, has reached out to the government requesting details regarding the registration process. According to Thakur, officials at Meta’s Singapore office contacted the ministry by phone, seeking clarification on the necessary documentation for formal registration in Nepal.
