New Delhi, September 5 (HS):

Chief Minister Rekha Gupta on Friday stated that the water level of the Yamuna River is consistently receding and there is no cause for panic among Delhi residents. At 7 PM on Friday, the Yamuna was recorded at 207.09 meters. The Chief Minister affirmed that she is herself closely monitoring the situation and the administration is working round-the-clock to provide relief to those affected by the floods.

She emphasized that food, drinking water, medical aid, sanitation facilities, and other essential support are being made available at relief camps. Officials have been directed to conduct a comprehensive assessment of crop damage in affected areas.

Review from CM’s Camp Office

Reviewing the situation of floods in the capital, Chief Minister Gupta convened an online meeting with the Divisional Commissioner and District Magistrates (DMs) from her camp office “Mukhyamantri Jan Seva Sadan” on Friday. In the meeting, clear and significant instructions were issued regarding the condition of flood-affected regions and relief measures for victims.

Following the meeting, CM Gupta informed that the water level of the Yamuna is steadily declining and conditions are expected to normalize soon. However, she clarified that the government remains fully engaged in assisting flood victims. District administrations have been instructed to maintain 24x7 vigilance in affected regions and ensure proper provision of essential services at relief camps.

She underscored that safeguarding the lives and livelihoods of those affected by this natural calamity is the prime responsibility of her government, and no negligence will be tolerated. Evacuations have already been carried out from low-lying riverbed settlements, with arrangements for their shelter and welfare made in relief camps.

Directives to Protect Vulnerable Groups & Livestock

According to Gupta, special instructions were issued to all DMs to ensure care for the elderly, women, and children in flood-hit areas. The Delhi Disaster Management Authority (DDMA) is maintaining continuous oversight. Authorities have also been told to coordinate with social organizations to mobilize immediate assistance if required.

Vice versa, instructions were given to secure farmers’ cattle and other livestock, with arrangements for fodder and shelter. Administration teams are monitoring the situation to prevent any serious loss. CM Gupta further highlighted that assessment of crop damage is underway so that fair compensation to affected farmers can be considered.

The Chief Minister also noted that Delhi MPs, ministers, MLAs, and other public representatives are actively visiting affected regions, assisting victims, and ensuring solutions to local problems. She drew attention to water inflows from certain Haryana drains into Delhi’s border farmlands and directed district officials to coordinate with Haryana authorities for resolution.

High-Level BJP Meeting

Separately, at the BJP Delhi headquarters, a high-level meeting chaired by State President Virendra Sachdeva reviewed the flood situation in both Delhi and across the nation. The meeting was attended by CM Rekha Gupta, Delhi ministers, BJP MPs, and State General Secretary (Organization) Pawan Rana, among other functionaries.

Political Opposition Raises Concerns

AAP leader Arvind Kejriwal visited flood-hit Shastri Park, alleging mismanagement in relief camps. He claimed that displaced residents were not being provided timely meals, drinking water, or mosquito control measures. According to him, tents were erected belatedly despite continuous rains, reflecting administrative negligence.

Delhi Congress President Devender Yadav issued a statement accusing the government of failing to maintain roads, claiming that rain-induced floods have left Delhi facing both waterlogging and collapsing roads. He said that pothole-ridden roads pose life-threatening risks, citing examples from Ali Pur Highway, Sadar Bazaar, Chandni Chowk, Red Fort access roads, and several Delhi villages. He criticized the PWD for falsely claiming a world record with the repair of potholes in June, which he said was exposed as a hollow claim after rains.

Preparedness and Priorities

CM Rekha Gupta reiterated that the safety and security of flood-affected citizens remain the government’s highest priority. The disaster management teams, senior officials, and health services are on full alert to deal with any emergency situation.
