Mumbai,
07 Aug (HS): The Bombay High Court has imposed a ban on feeding pigeons. The Court has
directed the State Government to form a Study Committee, and also consider
an alternative place for Mumbai’s Kabutarkhana. The court specifically stated that
human health is the most important factor while imposing a ban on the Kaburkhana.
The droppings and feathers cause serious health issues among human beings.
The
Constitution has granted every citizen the right to live. For the demand of any
specific groups of people health of many others cannot be compromised. The next
hearing on the issue will be held next Wednesday. The Court has directed the
Advocate General to remain present on Wednesday.
A
community approached the court following orders to ban the feeding of pigeons, particularly
at Dadar’s Kabutarkhana. The place was also covered with tarpaulin. Chief
Minister Devendra Fadnavis had also taken cognizance of the Jain community’s feelings.
The HC, however, considered health of people as the first priority and banned
feeding the birds at the Kabutarkhana.
Mumbai
Municipal Corporation submitted reports from two hospitals. The Court wanted
the civic authorities to submit detailed data related to the health problems
due to droppings and feathers of pigeons.
The
droppings and feathers can cause serious respiratory problems, including hypersensitive
pneumonia, swelling in the lungs, and the respiratory tract.
The
government authorities have appealed to the people to refrain from feeding
these birds. Violation of the orders will invite a fine of Rs 500.
