Farmers Satisfied with ₹3,100 MSP on Paddy; BJD’s Protest Unfounded: BJP MLA Ashok Mahanti

Bhubaneswar, 8 August (H.S.): BJP MLA Ashok Mahanti has criticized the Biju Janata Dal (BJD) for its proposed farmers’ agitation, asserting that farmers in Odisha are receiving adequate support from both the central and state governments and are satisfied with current procurement arrangements.

In a media statement, Mahanti described the BJD’s planned protest as politically motivated and lacking credibility. He accused the party of trying to mislead the public for political gain after failing to fulfill its own promises while in power.

“BJD previously promised a ₹100 per quintal bonus for paddy farmers but did not deliver. Now, when the BJP-led governments at the Centre and state are ensuring the procurement of paddy at ₹3,100 per quintal, BJD is trying to exploit the situation,” Mahanti remarked.

He emphasized that the BJD has no moral authority to address farmers' issues, having taken no significant actions to support the agricultural community during its tenure. “If they couldn’t help farmers while in power, they have no justification for protesting now,” he stated.

Highlighting the success of government initiatives, Mahanti claimed that farmers are benefiting from various welfare programs and that the procurement process is smooth and efficient. “People are receiving the benefits of government schemes in a timely and transparent manner, and farmers are satisfied with the current support,” he added.

The BJP leader acknowledged that while democratic protest is a constitutional right, it should be based on genuine concerns rather than political opportunism. He asserted that the BJD’s planned protest lacks substance and will not resonate with the public or the farming community.
