Delhi, 6 August (H.S.):US President Donald Trump announced an additional 25 per cent tariff increase on Indian imports, raising the total tariffs to 50 per cent, citing national security and foreign policy concerns due to India's oil purchases from Russia. The Executive Order states that these imports threaten U.S. interests. The initial duty takes effect on August 7, with the additional levy following in 21 days. This increase will raise costs for Indian exports, especially in sectors like auto parts, textiles, and electronics, potentially widening the trade imbalance and prompting a reevaluation of supply chains.
India has deemed the 25 percent additional tariff imposed by the United States as unfair, vowing to protect its national interests. The Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson, Randhir Jaiswal, criticized the U.S. decision, noting that many countries engage in trade with Russia for their national interests, making the tariffs on India unreasonable. He highlighted that India's oil imports from Russia are driven by market factors and are essential for ensuring energy security for its 1.4 billion citizens. India will take all necessary measures in response to this executive order from the U.S. President.
The United States has in recent days targeted India's oil imports from Russia. We have already made clear our position on these issues, including the fact that our imports are based on market factors and done with the overall objective of ensuring the energy security of 1.4 billion people of India. It is therefore extremely unfortunate that the US should choose to impose additional tariffs on India for actions that several other countries are also taking in their own national interest. We reiterate that these actions are unfair, unjustified and unreasonable.India will take all actions necessary to protect its national interests, the statement reads.
