Delhi, 26 August (H.S.): The centenary celebrations of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) commenced on Tuesday at Vigyan Bhavan in the capital under the theme “100 Years of Sangh’s Journey – New Horizons.” The three-day event, scheduled from August 26 to 28, will feature daily lectures by RSS Sarsanghchalak Mohan Bhagwat at 5:30 p.m.

Addressing the inaugural session, Bhagwat said the Sangh was created for India and exists solely for the nation’s progress. “The Sangh’s true relevance lies in making India a Vishwaguru,” he remarked. Tracing history, he said India once stood at the peak of prosperity and freedom but was weakened by repeated invasions. The 1857 revolt may not have succeeded, he added, but it triggered vital introspection that later gave rise to the freedom movement.

Bhagwat stressed that independence was not achieved by soldiers alone but through the awakening of society. From spinning the charkha to armed resistance, he said, multiple streams came together to pave the way for freedom. Yet, the level of consciousness that should have developed after independence was lacking. Reform movements had some impact, he noted, but superstition and complacency continued to hold society back. Citing Swami Vivekananda, Bhagwat said efforts to return to cultural roots were crucial, and their influence remains visible even today. He also highlighted that RSS founder Dr. K.B. Hedgewar worked across all reform streams and was driven by patriotism since childhood.

Speaking on the Sangh’s image, Bhagwat said discussions about the RSS are often shaped by perceptions rather than facts. A similar dialogue was held at Vigyan Bhavan in 2018, he recalled, with the aim of presenting truth rather than persuading anyone. “The centenary journey is not just about the Sangh’s growth—it is about securing India’s rightful place on the global stage,” he said.

Emphasizing India’s role in the modern world, Bhagwat said every nation has a mission, and India’s mission is to guide humanity on the path of unity and peace.
