New Delhi, Aug 24 (HS): Domestic equity markets ended the week on a strong note for the second consecutive week, supported by progress on key GST reforms, easing crude oil prices, and favorable monsoon conditions.

During the trading week ended August 22, the BSE Sensex gained 709.19 points, or 0.87 percent, to close at 81,306.85, while the NSE Nifty advanced 238.80 points, or 0.96 percent, to settle at 24,870.10.

On a sectoral and broader market level, momentum remained robust:

-The BSE Largecap Index ended with a 1% weekly gain, led by strong performances in Waaree Energies, Avenue Supermarts, Maruti Suzuki India, IDBI Bank, Swiggy, and TVS Motor Company.

-The Midcap Index surged 2%, with notable strength seen in UNO Minda, Ola Electric Mobility, L&T Finance, Astral Ltd, and Phoenix Mills. However, Torrent Power, Abbott India, Kalyan Jewellers, Glenmark Pharma, Aurobindo Pharma, Bharat Forge, and Tata Communications emerged as major losers in this segment.

-The Smallcap Index too rose 2%, powered by gains in Rishabh Instruments, KNR Rail Engineering, HLE Glascoat, Pennar Industries, Apollo Micro Systems, KIOCL, and Jai Corporation. On the downside, Agarwal Industrial Corporation, Nazara Technologies, Uflex, Suratwwala Business Group, Thyrocare Technologies, GVK Power & Infrastructure, Shilpa Medicare, Ethos, Valiant Organics, and Master Trust-SIS were among the weekly underperformers.

From a sectoral perspective, the BSE Auto Index stole the limelight with a sharp 5% rally through the week, while Telecom, Consumer Durables, and Realty indices also clocked gains of around 3% each. In contrast, the BSE Power Index and the Public Sector Enterprises Index slipped 0.50% on a weekly basis.
