Delhi, 6 July (H.S.): PM Narendra Modi paid tributes to Dr. Syama Prasad Mookerjee on his birth anniversary, highlighting his sacrifices for the country's honor and pride. Modi emphasized that Mookerjee's ideals are essential for building a developed and self-reliant India.
In a X post, PM said;Heartfelt tributes to the immortal son of the nation, Dr. Shyama Prasad Mukherjee on his birth anniversary. He sacrificed his life to protect the honour and pride of the country. His ideals and principles are invaluable in building a developed and self-reliant India.
Syama Prasad Mookerjee, born on 7 July 1901 in Calcutta, was an accomplished academic and barrister. He held various degrees from Calcutta University and entered politics, initially with the Congress Party before resigning due to ideological differences. Mookerjee became the youngest Vice-Chancellor of Calcutta University at 33 and later the Leader of the Opposition in Bengal as an independent. He strongly opposed the Muslim League and advocated for a united India. Elected to the Constituent Assembly, he participated in key debates. In 1951, he founded the Bharatiya Jana Sangh, aiming for economic liberalism and national reunification. A vocal critic of Article 370, he died on 23 June 1953 while in Jammu and Kashmir police custody.
