Road Safety Signs to be Taught in Schools

Chennai, 13 June (H.S.) : The Tamil Nadu government has taken a significant step towards promoting road safety by deciding to incorporate road safety signs and rules into school curricula. School Education Minister Anbil Mahesh Poyyamozhi announced that a circular will be issued to all schools, making it mandatory to educate students on road safety signs during morning assembly sessions. This initiative aims to raise awareness among students and promote safe driving habits from a young age.

To implement this program effectively, nearly 812 teachers from both private and government schools have been trained on a faculty guide provided in the road safety curriculum. A workbook on road safety will be distributed to 3 lakh students in 2,000 schools across Coimbatore, targeting students from classes 4 to 8. This comprehensive approach is expected to help students understand the importance of road safety and develop good habits that will benefit them throughout their lives.

The decision comes in response to the alarming number of road accidents in the country. With India recording around 1,85,000 fatal road accidents every year, and Tamil Nadu featuring in the top three slots for the last ten years, this initiative is a step in the right direction. By educating students about road safety signs, rules, and best practices, the government hopes to reduce road accidents and promote a safer environment for all road users.
