Guwahati, 1 June (HS): Amid the serious situation of floods and landslides caused by torrential rains in Assam, Union Home Minister Amit Shah has assured the state of all possible assistance from the central government. Chief Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma said on Sunday that the Home Minister called him and inquired about the situation and promised to provide all necessary help.

Chief Minister Sarma wrote on the social media platform 'X', Home Minister Amit Shah called me a while ago and inquired about the flood situation in Assam and assured all possible help. I apprised him of the preparations made so far. We are grateful for his sensitive attitude and cooperation.

The situation is very bad due to floods and landslides in 12 districts of the state. So far more than 58,000 people have been affected. On June 1, the Brahmaputra river crossed the danger mark in Dibrugarh, making the situation more serious.

According to the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA), so far eight people have killed and 175 villages have been affected. Of these, 3 killed in floods and 5 in landslides. These deaths have occurred in Golaghat, Lakhimpur and Kamrup (Metro) districts. Children have also lost their lives in Golaghat and Guwahati.

More than 7,000 people are living in relief camps. 175 villages of Dhemaji, South Salmara, Lakhimpur, Dibrugarh, Golaghat and Karbi Anglong have been affected. The administration has set up 16 relief camps and distribution centers, where more than 7000 people have taken shelter.

There has been heavy damage to crops and livestock.

About 791 hectares of agricultural land has been submerged. About 76,000 animals have been affected and 194 animals have been reported to have been swept away.

Road and other infrastructure damage has also occurred on a large scale. 22 roads, a bridge, several embankments and irrigation canals have been damaged. School and Anganwadi centre buildings have also been affected.

Guwahati is also affected by urban flooding. About 10,000 people have been affected due to urban flooding in Guwahati and other districts. Teams of SDRF, NDRF, fire service and local administration are engaged in relief and rescue operations.

The Meteorological Department has warned of more rain, so the state administration is alert and efforts are on to minimize the damage.
