RG Kar Medical College Scandal: CBI Probes Possible Link Between Financial Irregularities and Doctor's Murder

Kolkata, 16 May (H.S.): The investigation into the brutal rape and murder of a young woman doctor at RG Kar Medical College has taken a disturbing new turn, with the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) now suspecting a connection between the crime and large-scale financial corruption within the institution.

According to CBI officials, evidence suggests that ongoing financial irregularities at the college and the recent murder may be intertwined. The agency is now examining whether the crime was not merely an isolated act of violence, but part of a larger, organized network operating within the college.

Sources within the CBI revealed that three senior officials — Ali Khan, Suman Hazra, and Biplab Sinha — all reportedly close to former principal Dr. Sandeep Ghosh, are under investigation. The trio is believed to have assisted Ghosh in previous financial scams, and investigators suspect they may also have played a role in the recent murder, either directly or indirectly.

The CBI has so far analyzed more than 200 CCTV footage clips related to the incident and recorded statements from 12 additional witnesses. Some of the leads gathered during the probe suggest that the individuals involved in the heinous crime may have connections to those implicated in the financial scams, indicating a possible operational link.

Back in August 2024, the Enforcement Directorate (ED) had arrested Dr. Ghosh on charges related to a multi-crore financial scam at the college. He was later also arrested in connection with the rape and murder case. These overlapping charges have raised serious concerns that both incidents could be the result of a deeply rooted conspiracy involving influential figures at the institution.

With this evolving perspective, the CBI is now consolidating both cases under a unified investigation. The agency believes that a powerful and organized network may have orchestrated not only financial crimes but also facilitated or enabled a violent criminal act within the college campus.

This revelation has significantly raised the stakes of the investigation, with officials determined to uncover the full extent of the alleged conspiracy that has shaken one of Kolkata's premier medical institutions.
