New York/Damascus, May 14 (HS): The United Nations (UN) has welcomed the decision of U.S. President Donald Trump to lift sanctions imposed on Syria. The UN stated that this step by the U.S. will pave the way for the reconstruction of Syria.

Geir Otto Pedersen, the UN's special envoy for Syria, warmly welcomed the U.S. decision to remove sanctions on the new Syrian government on Tuesday. He described it as a decisive step towards the reconstruction of Syria and the delivery of humanitarian aid.

Pedersen said in a social media post, “This decision will not only assist in the restoration of essential services such as health and education, but it is also crucial for reviving the Syrian economy, encouraging regional support, and ensuring the participation of ordinary citizens in the country's reconstruction process.”

The UN's statement came at a time when the new government, following a change in power in Syria, is striving for international recognition. The lifting of sanctions by the U.S. will not only accelerate humanitarian aid but also pave the way for Syria to re-engage on regional and global platforms.
