New Delhi, April 9 (H.S.): India's double Olympic medalist, javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra, announced he will begin the 2025 season at the Diamond League meet in Doha on May 16. Eager to perform again for the passionate crowd, Chopra previously won gold at the Tokyo Olympics and silver at the Paris Olympics, and set a world record of 88.67 meters in 2023.

Before his third visit to Doha, he mentioned the overwhelming support he receives from Indian fans in Qatar, stating, “I am always humbled by the recognition I receive from the Indian people in Qatar, and I often find myself short of words for it.”

Chopra said, “Last year was very educational for me, but I take pride in winning a medal in the Olympic Games under the Indian flag. I am now fully fit and working hard with Jan Železný. I am eagerly looking forward to starting my season in Doha.”

Chopra, a 27-year-old athlete coached by record holder Jan Železný, has elevated Indian athletics. He made history as the first Indian track and field athlete to win Olympic and World Championship golds, along with a Diamond League victory. However, last season was challenging, with Chopra finishing second to Arshad Nadeem in the Olympic final and to Anderson Peters in the Diamond League final.

He added, “The crowd at the Qatar Sports Club is always loud and enthusiastic, and I believe it brings out our best performances. I know the fans here have high expectations of me, and if the conditions are good and the atmosphere is fantastic, it is possible. For me, consistency is more important, which I believe is my greatest strength, rather than just chasing a number.”

After the Doha meet, Chopra will also participate in the 'Neeraj Chopra Classic' javelin event in Panchkula on May 24.
