Canada Election

Toronto, 28 April (H.S.): Canadians will vote in a significant federal election on Monday, April 28, where incumbent Liberal Prime Minister Mark Carney faces Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre. Initial results are expected between 7 pm and 7:30 pm EST, with most results available by 9:30 pm. This election emerges after a tumultuous political climate marked by dissatisfaction towards former Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, leading to his unexpected resignation. Should Carney fail to secure a mandate, he will hold the record for the shortest-serving Prime Minister in Canada. Poilievre, advocating a 'Canada First' strategy, focuses on economic reforms and stricter immigration policies.

In their final campaign pitches, both leaders addressed concerns regarding US President Trump's tariffs and potential annexation of Canada. Carney has proposed reducing the federal deficit, lowering the lowest marginal tax rate, and eliminating the Goods and Services Tax for first-time home buyers of properties under $1 million CAD. In contrast, Poilievre pledges a 15% cut to the lowest tax bracket, repeal of the industrial carbon tax, and removal of the federal sales tax for first-time buyers of homes up to $1.3 million CAD.

A recent Nanos poll indicated a modest 4-point gap between the two leading parties, while Poilievre's Conservatives initially led by over 20 points earlier in January. With 28 million registered voters across 343 ridings and staggered polling times, this election is pivotal for Canada’s political landscape.
