New Delhi, April 26 (H.S.): The Indian women's cricket team kicks off its campaign against Sri Lanka in Colombo on Sunday, marking the beginning of the Women's Tri-Series, which serves as crucial preparation for the ODI World Cup in India later this year. This series emphasizes testing the team’s bowling combinations, while the batting lineup appears robust.
South Africa is the third team participating. The Indian squad faces challenges due to injuries to key fast bowlers Renuka Singh, Pooja Vastrakar, and Titas Sadhu, resulting in reliance on Arundhati Reddy and all-rounder Amanjot Kaur. Captain Harmanpreet Kaur is also keen to try out young fast bowler Kashvee Gautam, who impressed during the Women's Premier League.
With slow pitches expected at the Premadasa Stadium, India will leverage its spin attack, led by senior off-spinner Deepti Sharma and Sneh Rana, along with left-arm spinner Shri Charani. The batting order includes Harmanpreet Kaur, Smriti Mandhana, Richa Ghosh, Jemimah Rodrigues, and Harleen Deol. Although Shafali Verma was overlooked, the all-round skills of Deepti and Amanjot add depth.
Sri Lanka, the host nation, has made significant changes, adding four uncapped players and welcoming experienced spinner Inoka Ranawira. The Indian team, confident after winning its last six ODIs, aims for a strong start to ensure solid preparations for the World Cup.
