New Delhi, April 2 (HS): The central government has appointed Poonam Gupta, Director General of the prestigious research institute National Council of Applied Economic Research (NCAER), as Deputy Governor of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI). Her term will be for three years.

Official sources reported on Wednesday that the Appointment Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) has approved Poonam Gupta’s appointment as Deputy Governor of RBI for a three-year term. This position of Deputy Governor of RBI became vacant after Michael Debabrata Patra resigned in January.

Poonam Gupta is currently the Director General of the country’s largest economic policy think tank, the National Council of Applied Economic Research (NCAER). She is also a member of the Prime Minister's Economic Advisory Council. Additionally, she serves as the convener of the advisory council of the 16th Finance Commission.

Poonam Gupta holds a master’s degree in economics from the Delhi School of Economics at Delhi University and a PhD from the University of Maryland, USA. She won the EXIM Bank award in 1998 for her PhD on international economics. She joined NCAER in 2021 after working in senior positions at the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank in Washington for nearly two decades. Additionally, Gupta has served as RBI Chair Professor at the National Institute of Public Finance and Policy (NIPFP) and as a professor at ICRIER.
