Rome,19 April (H.S.): U.S. Vice President JD Vance met Italian Premier Giorgia Meloni in Rome for tariff discussions, after their prior meeting in the Oval Office where Trump praised Meloni's migration policies but remained firm on tariffs.

A joint statement indicated Trump's upcoming visit to Italy and potential U.S.-Europe meetings. Vance, a Catholic convert, attended Good Friday services at St. Peter’s Basilica with his family and planned to meet Vatican Secretary of State Cardinal Pietro Parolin.

Although no official meeting with Pope Francis was announced, speculation existed about a possible audience. Their past tensions over migration policy are notable, with Francis advocating for migrants and Vance referencing a Catholic doctrine to justify his stance.

In his February 10 letter, Francis clarified Vance’s misunderstanding of Christian love, emphasizing that it should embody fraternity for all, inspired by the parable of the Good Samaritan. Vance acknowledged the critique but committed to defending his stance. He expressed gratitude for his role, particularly on Good Friday, wishing blessings for Christians globally.

The day commemorates Christ’s crucifixion and is observed by the Vatican with significant rituals. Meanwhile, Meloni has positioned herself as a link between Trump and Europe, sharing similar conservative values but facing tension over differing views on Ukraine. Vance reiterated U.S.-Italy relations, intending to update Meloni on Russia-Ukraine negotiations while commenting on the beauty of the Italian language during their discussions.
