New Delhi, 19 April (H.S.): On April 19, the Telangana unit of Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) organized a protest in Jangaon district, condemning violence in West Bengal's Murshidabad district linked to the Waqf Amendment Act 2025. The rally marched from the Jangaon RTC intersection to the collectorate office.
VHP members alleged attacks on Hindus during West Bengal protests, chanting slogans against Chief Minister Mamta Banerjee and demanding an end to violence against the Hindu community. A VHP leader accused the state government of promoting anti-Hindu sentiments and protecting assailants targeting Hindus. The protest followed violent clashes in Murshidabad, South 24 Parganas, and Hooghly on April 11, resulting in three deaths, including a 21-year-old Muslim and a father-son duo, over 100 arrests, and property damage. Police vehicles were set ablaze as protesters clashed, blocked roads, and hurled stones.
West Bengal's Director General of Police (DGP) Rajeev Kumar stated that strict action would be taken against violence, cautioning the public against unverified rumors that may incite unrest. In response to the outrage, Chief Minister Mamta Banerjee clarified that the Waqf Act would not be implemented in West Bengal, distancing her government from the controversial law enacted by the central government. She urged citizens to remain calm and avoid falling for provocations, underscoring her administration's opposition to the law and calling for peace amidst rising tensions.
