Governor Visits Murshidabad's Jafrabad, Meets Family of Father-Son Killed in Violence, Defies CM's Advisory

Kolkata, 19 April (H.S.): Amid rising tension and violence in West Bengal, Governor Dr. C.V. Ananda Bose on Saturday visited Jafrabad in Murshidabad district, where a father and son—Hargobind Das and Chandan Das—were killed in a recent incident of violence. The Governor met with the bereaved family members, who broke down in tears upon seeing him.

The Governor’s visit comes despite a clear advisory from Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, who had urged him to refrain from visiting sensitive areas in light of the current situation. Ignoring the advisory, Governor Bose made the journey and assured the grieving family that justice would be delivered.

Speaking to the media, Dr. Bose said, “I spoke to the family and assured them of justice. I have taken note of the demand for a BSF camp in the area, and I will raise the matter with both the state and central governments.”

The Governor spent around 13 minutes in Jafrabad before heading towards Betbona. Following his departure, local residents staged a protest carrying placards demanding the establishment of a BSF camp in the area.

So far, police have arrested three individuals in connection with the double murder, including the prime accused, Enjamul. The state government has also constituted a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe the incident. The investigation is ongoing.

The violence, triggered days ago by tensions surrounding the Waqf Amendment Act, had escalated rapidly in Murshidabad. Although the situation has since been brought under control, a sense of fear and insecurity still grips the region. This has led to growing public demand for a permanent BSF presence.

The continuing demand for BSF deployment also raises questions about public confidence in the local police. So far, police have arrested a total of 274 individuals in connection with the unrest, and the investigation continues.
