Bhubaneswar, 18 April (H.S.): A sudden spell of heavy rain accompanied by thunderstorms brought much-needed relief to Bhubaneswar on Friday, breaking the ongoing heatwave conditions that had gripped the city. However, the downpour also disrupted normal life, leading to traffic congestion and waterlogging in several low-lying areas.

The intense rainfall, which began in the morning , caught many residents off guard. Commuters sought shelter under flyovers and overpasses as roads quickly became inundated. Vehicular movement slowed considerably, and several routes reported significant delays due to flooding.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) had earlier issued an alert predicting thunderstorms and rainfall in the region. The weather event offered welcome relief from the sweltering temperatures of the past week, but also underscored the city's persistent drainage issues.

Multiple areas across Bhubaneswar, particularly in low-lying zones, reported severe waterlogging, raising concerns about the city's preparedness for the upcoming monsoon season.

Authorities are monitoring the situation, and civic bodies have been urged to take prompt measures to address the water accumulation and ensure smooth traffic flow.
