Washington, 17 April (H.S.): President Donald Trump announced significant progress in trade talks with Japanese officials, aiming to avoid increased tariffs against US trading partners. Following a meeting with the Japanese delegation, Trump expressed his satisfaction on social media, noting the productive discussions led by the US Treasury and Commerce Departments.
Although the talks did not immediately halt tariffs, Japan's chief negotiator, Ryosei Akazawa, confirmed that further rounds of discussions are scheduled for later this month. They emphasized the importance of reaching an agreement swiftly, especially before the end of a 90-day tariff reprieve. While currency issues were not addressed, speculation arose concerning Japan's defense spending.
The Japanese yen weakened against the dollar following the talks, reflecting market concerns. As countries race to negotiate with the US to prevent high import taxes, Japan aims to propose a comprehensive deal in exchange for lowering levies, highlighting its significant investments in the US.
