Napier, 29 March (H.S.): Pakistan faced a devastating defeat against New Zealand in their first ODI at McLean Park, Napier, losing seven wickets for just 22 runs and finishing 73 runs short of the target. Chasing a challenging 346, Pakistan initially looked in control with Babar Azam, who was well-set at the crease needing 96 runs off 69 balls. However, a sudden collapse derailed their momentum.
New Zealand's Mark Chapman was the standout performer, scoring a brilliant 132 off 111 balls, supported by Nathan Smith who took four wickets. On debut, Muhammad Abbas hit the fastest fifty in ODIs off just 24 balls, contributing to New Zealand’s total of 344/9 after being asked to bat first. Chapman’s superb innings included 13 fours and six sixes, forming a key partnership with Daryl Mitchell, who added 76 runs.
For Pakistan, Irfan Khan took three wickets but was expensive, while Haris Rauf had two for 38 runs. Despite solid contributions from Abdullah Shafique (36) and Usman Khan (39), quick dismissals and Babar's eventual fall for 78 put Pakistan on the back foot. Salman Ali Agha’s 58 ran out of steam as Pakistan was bowled out for 271, succumbing to New Zealand's bowling attack.
