Chennai, 12 March (H.S.):The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange alert for Thoothukudi district in Tamil Nadu, warning of heavy rainfall and strong winds in the region.
According to IMD (https://x.com/Indiametdept/status/1899706833788678333), the alert comes as a low-pressure system has formed over the Bay of Bengal, bringing heavy rainfall to parts of southern Tamil Nadu. The IMD has predicted heavy to very heavy rainfall in Thoothukudi and surrounding areas, with wind speeds reaching up to 40 km/h.
The heavy rainfall has already begun to impact salt production in the region, with many salt pans inundated with water. The salt production industry is a significant contributor to the local economy, and the disruption is likely to cause losses for salt producers.
In addition, the rough seas have forced fishermen to dock their boats, with many vessels unable to venture out into the choppy waters. The fishing community is bracing for further disruptions as the weather system is expected to persist for the next 24 hours.
The Tamil Nadu government has put emergency services on high alert, with the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and other agencies ready to respond to any situation that may arise.
Residents in the affected areas have been advised to take necessary precautions and stay indoors during the heavy rainfall. The situation is being closely monitored by the authorities, and further updates will be provided as necessary.
