Tamil Nadu, 6 February (H.S.): The Madras High Court has ordered the immediate return of a gold mangalsutra (thaali) seized by Chennai customs officials from a newly married Sri Lankan woman passenger. The court termed the seizure as inappropriate and unfair.
Justice Krishnan Ramasamy emphasized that customs officials must respect the customs and traditions of every religion in the country. The court noted that the woman was wearing the mangalsutra as part of her marital tradition and that it was not liable for seizure under the Customs Act.
The court also directed the principal chief commissioner of customs (Tamil Nadu & Puducherry) to conduct an inquiry against the officials involved and take appropriate action. The court criticized the seizing officer, S Mythili, for her unbecoming conduct and ordered action against her.
The woman, Thanushika, had arrived at Chennai International Airport on December 30, 2023, with her family members. She was forced to remove her mangalsutra and other gold jewelry, which were then seized by customs officials.
The Madras High Court's order upholds the rights of passengers and emphasizes the importance of respecting customs and traditions.
