Jalpaiguri, 4 February (H.S.): A court in West Bengal on Tuesday sentenced a convict named Lal Singh Oraon to death for the murder of his wife, Sakhi Oraon, and their 18-month-old daughter in Nagrakata, Jalpaiguri district. The incident took place on March 27, 2023, at the Looksan tea garden where Lal Singh allegedly hacked both victims to death with an axe.
Additional District and Sessions Judge Biplab Roy at the Jalpaiguri sessions court convicted Lal Singh after his arrest, which followed a complaint by his mother-in-law. After committing the murders, Lal Singh attempted suicide by inflicting injuries on himself with a knife, according to Jalpaiguri Superintendent of Police Khandbahale Umesh Ganpat. After receiving medical treatment, he was brought to court.
Public Prosecutor Prasenjit Deb mentioned that the trial involved examining 13 witnesses. The court found Lal Singh guilty last week, leading to the death sentence being pronounced on Tuesday.
