NEW DELHI, Dec 28 (H.S.): The death of Anjel Chakma has brought renewed attention to concerns regarding the safety and well-being of students from the Northeast studying in different parts of the country.

According to available information, the incident has prompted discussions among student groups and civil society organisations over issues related to discrimination, access to institutional support, and the availability of grievance redressal mechanisms for students from the region.

Students from the Northeast frequently travel outside their home states for higher education and employment. Various reports and past studies have highlighted challenges faced by them, including instances of social exclusion, verbal abuse, and lack of adequate support systems in host cities.

A government-appointed committee in the past had documented complaints of discrimination faced by people from the Northeast in metropolitan areas, particularly in educational and residential settings. The findings had recommended measures such as improved awareness, dedicated support cells, and stronger coordination between educational institutions and local authorities.
