Chennai, 27 December (H.S.) : Acclaimed filmmaker Pa Ranjith has described the sixth edition of Margazhiyil Makkalisai as a powerful political statement rather than just a musical gathering.
Speaking at the inauguration of the three-day festival organized by the Neelam Cultural Centre, the director emphasized that the event serves to challenge the traditional gatekeepers of culture. He noted that the festival was envisioned as a grand dream to reclaim Tamil tradition for the common people and provide a platform for independent artists.
The event, which began on December 26, features over 500 artists performing diverse genres including parai drum music, folk songs, and Dalit liberation music. Ranjith highlighted that these art forms are essential tools for social justice and political awakening.
The festival aims to offer a robust alternative to the classical music performances that traditionally dominate the city's Margazhi season. By centering the voices of marginalized communities, the initiative seeks to promote a more inclusive cultural landscape.
During the inaugural ceremony, DMK MP Kanimozhi praised the festival for reclaiming cultural elements that were historically marginalized. She stated that art should play a proactive role in shaping society rather than merely reflecting existing conditions.
Other prominent figures from the film industry, including directors Vetrimaaran and Lokesh Kanagaraj, also attended the event. Vetrimaaran lauded the platform for turning thoughts into action and creating a space to discuss legacy and social reform.
Music director G V Prakash, a regular supporter of the initiative, expressed his commitment to providing a voice for marginal artists without financial barriers. He also pledged continued support for the Casteless Collective band.
The festival continues through December 28, showcasing the documentary The Voice of the Rebels and various musical tributes. These performances are designed to celebrate the rich heritage of people's music while advocating for systemic social change.
