Guwahati, 22 December (HS):

Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) has paid tribute to the valour and supreme sacrifice of Captain Sunil Kumar Chowdhary, Sena Medal and Kirti Chakra (Posthumous) awardee of 7/11 Gorkha Rifles, by rechristening WDP4B Locomotive No. 40024 in his honour at the Siliguri Diesel Locomotive Shed.

Captain Chowdhary exemplified the finest traditions of the Gorkha Regiment through his bravery, discipline and unwavering commitment to duty. During counter-insurgency operations in Assam, he displayed exceptional courage and leadership, earning the Sena Medal and was later posthumously awarded the Kirti Chakra for conspicuous gallantry beyond the call of duty.

The 4500 HP WDP4B high-speed diesel locomotive, known for its reliable performance under challenging conditions, symbolises resilience and service—values shared by Indian Railways and the Armed Forces. NFR stated that the dedication reflects its respect for the courage and sacrifices of the Armed Forces and paramilitary personnel.

The gesture holds special significance for the North-East and the Siliguri Corridor, regions closely associated with the Gorkha Regiments. As Locomotive No. 40024 operates across the railway network, it will serve as a moving tribute to the soldiers who have laid down their lives in service of the nation.
