Murshidabad, 22 December (H.S.): Humayun Kabir, the suspended Trinamool Congress MLA who recently made headlines in Beldanga regarding the foundation stone laying ceremony of the Babri Masjid, formally announced his new political party on Monday, as previously declared. His new party is named 'Janata Unnayan Party'. Along with the party's announcement, Humayun Kabir also declared the names of several candidates for the 2026 West Bengal Assembly elections, sending a surprising message to political circles.
Most interestingly, the list of candidates includes more than one person named 'Humayun Kabir'. This means that in the upcoming assembly elections, the ruling and opposition parties will have to compete against candidates named 'Humayun Kabir' in several constituencies. Humayun Kabir, the chairman of the Janata Unnayan Party, described this as a major political 'surprise'.
Humayun Kabir said that he himself will contest from Rejinagar and Beldanga assembly constituencies and is confident of winning both seats. He also announced that another Humayun Kabir, a doctor by profession, has been nominated as a candidate from the Raninagar assembly constituency. This is the same Humayun Kabir who contested on a Trinamool Congress ticket in 2016, although he did not win then. By fielding him again in the 2026 elections, the party has played a surprising card.
Furthermore, yet another Humayun Kabir, a businessman by profession, has been nominated from Bhagwangola constituency. Humayun Kabir also indicated that another Humayun Kabir will be nominated from the Birbhum district, although his name has not yet been formally announced.
The new party also clarified that it will not be limited to just one community. The Janata Unnayan Party has also announced the names of several Hindu candidates. Manisha Pandey has been nominated from the Murshidabad assembly constituency and Nisha Chattopadhyay from Ballygunge. Besides these, candidates have also been announced for several other assembly constituencies in the state.
Humayun Kabir said that his party's main objective is the development of the people of Bengal, and the party's election manifesto will be released very soon.
On this occasion, Humayun Kabir's statement was politically quite sharp and significant. From the stage, he warned Minister Firhad Hakim on one hand, and openly praised Abhishek Banerjee on the other. Humayun Kabir said,
“The day I get angry, I will take one lakh people and gherao Firhad Hakim's office.”
He also said that Abhishek Banerjee is talented. This statement is being considered very important in political circles.
