Chennai, 19 December (H.S.) : The Secular Progressive Alliance led by the ruling DMK has announced a state wide protest on December 24 to oppose the Union Government’s decision to replace the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act.

The alliance is demanding the immediate withdrawal of the Viksit Bharat Guarantee for Rozgar and Ajeevika Mission Gramin Bill 2025, which repeals the existing framework. According to the plan, demonstrations will be held at 10 am in the state capital and across all local levels, mobilizing beneficiaries of the 100 day employment scheme alongside party district secretaries and local body representatives.

Authorities from the DMK led alliance stated that the new legislation jeopardizes the livelihoods of crores of rural poor, particularly in performing states like Tamil Nadu. They expressed strong objection to the removal of Mahatma Gandhi's name from the scheme and highlighted concerns over the increased financial burden being placed on state governments.

The leadership alleged that the Union Government is deceiving the public and criticized the AIADMK for its perceived support of the Centre's move. The protest aims to raise a unified voice against what they describe as a threat to the economic stability of rural households.

Chief Minister M K Stalin has reportedly communicated these concerns directly to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, emphasizing that the proposed changes could strain inter governmental relations. State officials noted that the transition to the new framework might disrupt the consistent employment opportunities currently provided to rural workers.

The alliance has called upon all its members and the general public to participate in the upcoming demonstrations to protect the rights of the labor force. All updates regarding the protest locations and coordination are being shared with regional party wings to ensure a massive turnout on December 24.
