Kolkata, 19 December (H.S.) :Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) Sarsanghchalak Mohan Bhagwat on Friday addressed the Prabuddha Nagarik Sammelan organised in Siliguri, North Bengal, as part of the organisation’s centenary celebrations. The day-long conference was held at Uttar Banga Marwari Bhawan under the aegis of the RSS Uttar Banga Prant.
The Sammelan witnessed the participation of over a hundred eminent citizens from eight districts of North Bengal as well as the neighbouring state of Sikkim. The theme of the conference focused on the 100-year journey of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh. Senior citizens, academicians, professionals from various fields, social workers, cultural figures, and other prominent members of civil society took part in the deliberations.
Discussions during the conference centred on the Sangh’s century-long journey, its ideological foundation, and its role in social and national development. Addressing the gathering, RSS Chief Dr.Mohan Bhagwat spoke in detail on social reconstruction, civic responsibility, and the importance of enlightened citizens in strengthening both society and the nation.
The RSS chief said that building a healthy and prosperous nation requires the collective effort of positive and virtuous forces working together in the same direction. He underlined that character-building is possible only when individuals lead a simple life and maintain an active connection with society.
Highlighting the importance of the family unit, Bhagwat said every household should reflect on how much time, effort, and resources it contributes to the welfare of society, as the security and existence of families depend on a strong and harmonious social structure. He also urged people to regularly practise cultural traditions, relevant customs, and conduct that benefit the nation.
Addressing misconceptions about the RSS, Bhagwat said the organisation cannot be understood through conventional organisational frameworks, as there is no other organisation like it. He clarified that the RSS was not founded to oppose anyone or for personal gain, but to nurture a spirit of selfless service across all sections of society and to connect individuals engaged in social work without seeking publicity or recognition.
Speaking on national development, Dr.Mohan Bhagwat observed that in every prosperous country, social awakening and unity preceded economic growth. In line with this understanding, he said, the RSS places special emphasis on behavioural transformation at both individual and societal levels.
Referring to the life of RSS founder Keshav Baliram Hedgewar, Dr.Mohan Bhagwat recalled that despite poverty and adverse circumstances, Hedgewar remained deeply committed to education and national service. He evolved a system of work that nurtures all forms of service dedicated to the nation.
Highlighting centenary initiatives, Dr.Mohan Bhagwat said RSS volunteers would go door to door to spread awareness about ‘Panch Parivartan’, five key behavioural changes through which individuals can contribute to national well-being through conduct alone. He added that such changes at the personal and family level would define the true spirit of the centenary celebrations.
The Sammelan concluded with a renewed emphasis on dialogue, social responsibility, and individual conduct as the foundation of national development, reflecting the broader message of the RSS’s centenary year.
