New Delhi, 19 December (H.S.): Prime Minister Narendra Modi will embark on a two-day visit to Assam on December 20 and 21, during which he will inaugurate and lay the foundation stone of multiple development projects worth around ₹15,600 crore, marking significant progress in the state’s connectivity, industry, and infrastructure sectors.
On December 20, the Prime Minister will arrive in Guwahati around 3 p.m. and inaugurate the New Terminal Building of Lokapriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport, followed by an address to the gathering. The next morning, December 21 at 9:45 a.m., he will pay homage to the martyrs of the historic Assam Movement at the Swahid Smarak Kshetra in Boragaon, Guwahati.
Later, he will travel to Namrup in Dibrugarh, where he will perform Bhoomi Pujan for the Ammonia–Urea Fertilizer Project of the Assam Valley Fertilizer and Chemical Company Limited (AVFCL) and address another public gathering.
The new Integrated Terminal Building at Guwahati Airport, spread over 1.4 lakh square metres, is designed to handle up to 13 million passengers annually and features comprehensive upgrades to the runway, airfield, aprons, and taxiways.
As India’s first nature‑themed airport terminal, it draws inspiration from Assam’s biodiversity and cultural heritage under the theme “Bamboo Orchids.” The structure incorporates around 140 metric tonnes of Northeast bamboo, along with Kaziranga‑inspired green landscapes, Japi motifs, the one‑horned rhino symbol, and 57 orchid‑shaped columns modeled after the Kopou flower.
A unique “Sky Forest” with nearly one lakh indigenous plants offers passengers an immersive forest‑like experience. The terminal also sets new benchmarks in passenger convenience with DigiYatra‑enabled contactless travel, AI‑based operations, automated baggage handling, fast‑track immigration, and full‑body scanners for non‑intrusive security checks.
On December 21, the Prime Minister’s foundation‑laying at Namrup for the Ammonia–Urea Fertilizer Project, estimated at ₹10,600 crore, will mark a major stride toward self‑reliance in fertilizer production. The project will cater to the fertilizer needs of Assam and neighboring states, reduce import dependence, create large‑scale employment, and boost regional industrial growth, aligning with the Prime Minister’s vision of farmers’ welfare and inclusive development.
