Kolkata, 16 December (H.S.) :

Vijay Diwas was commemorated with grandeur at Vijay Durg, the Eastern Command headquarters of the Indian Army in Kolkata, marking India’s historic victory in the 1971 India–Pakistan War. Former Union Minister and Mizoram Governor General V K Singh was among the distinguished guests present at the ceremony.

Speaking to the media on the occasion, General Singh made a strong remark on the importance of historical memory in the context of India–Bangladesh relations. He said a nation that forgets its history cannot sustain its existence for long. Describing the 1971 war as a symbol of courage, sacrifice and decisive leadership, he said the day must always be remembered with pride and respect.

On bilateral ties, General Singh said India and Bangladesh have always stood by each other and this friendship will continue in the future as well. He stressed that Vijay Diwas is a day to honour the brave soldiers of both nations and should not be turned into a platform for political debate.

Commenting on the Northeast, he praised the efforts of the Narendra Modi government, saying the region has witnessed rapid development and improved security during the current tenure. He noted that the Northeast has made significant progress in sports, infrastructure and social development, far surpassing earlier years.

Speaking on India’s military strength, General Singh said that having himself served at the highest levels of the armed forces, he could clearly see a substantial increase in military capability compared to the past. He described this as a highly positive sign for the country’s national security.

He declined to comment on the current political situation in Bangladesh, reiterating that the core purpose of Vijay Diwas is to pay homage to the brave warriors who laid down their lives in the 1971 war, and that the occasion must always be observed in that spirit.
