Chennai, 16 December (H.S.) : The Garima Greh shelter for transgender persons in Chennai has finally received funds from the Union government for the fiscal year 2022-23, after a two-year delay. However, funding for the subsequent years, 2023-24 and 2024-25, is still pending.
The Garima Greh scheme, started in 2021 under the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, supports community-based organizations (CBOs) in establishing shelters in 12 locations across India, including Chennai, New Delhi, and Kolkata. The scheme's goal is to provide trans persons with essential necessities like shelter, food, medical care, and recreational facilities, alongside support for capacity building and skill development.
Funding Interruption: Although the pilot scheme began in 2021, it concluded in March 2022, which subsequently cut off funding for shelters nationwide.Impact on Operations: Due to insufficient funds, the shelters, including the one in Periyar Nagar, Kolathur, had to rely on donations, personal contributions, and loans to continue functioning.
Current Situation: The shelter in Kolathur currently houses at least 15 trans persons. R. Jeeva, the project director and a trans woman managing the shelter, confirmed that the recently received funds for 2022-23 will assist their work. Respite and Support: Trans persons, often those disowned by their families, can stay at the shelter for three to six months, receiving free shelter, food, skill development, and assistance in acquiring necessary government documents.
Jeeva also stated that the Union government has provided assurance that funds will be disbursed continuously in the future.
