TN Medical Council Clarifies Process for Registering Foreign Medical Graduates Amid Delay Reports

Chennai, 16 December (H.S.) : The Tamil Nadu Medical Council (TNMC) has issued a clarification to address recent media reports alleging delays in the registration process for Foreign Medical Graduates (FMGs). The Council emphasized that it follows a well-defined and time-consuming verification process to ensure patient safety and public trust.

Key Points from TNMC's Clarification: Verification Process: The TNMC's procedure for issuing provisional eligibility and registration certificates involves multiple steps, including scrutiny of screening test certificates, passport and travel details, embassy verification, and authentication of medical qualification certificates from the concerned foreign universities.

Fake Certificates Identified: The Council stated that this rigorous process is necessary and has already identified several cases of fake or invalid certificates, which were subsequently rejected.

Adherence to NMC Guidelines: For FMGs who pursued online courses or took examinations during the COVID-19 pandemic or war-related disruptions, the TNMC strictly follows specific circulars issued by the National Medical Commission (NMC) regarding eligibility and the duration of the Compulsory Rotatory Medical Internship (CRMI).

Internship Allotment: The TNMC clarified that its role is limited to verification and issuing registration certificates. The responsibility for allotting CRMI postings in NMC-recognized medical colleges across Tamil Nadu, as per the current 7.5% quota prescribed by NMC, rests with the Directorate of Medical Education (DME).

Vacancies Available: The Council confirmed that vacancies are still available in certain medical colleges under this quota. The TNMC concluded that it is committed to acting in a responsible, transparent, and balanced manner, facilitating genuine FMGs while actively preventing unqualified or fake practitioners from entering the medical system.
