Kolkata, 16 December (H.S.) :
In the wake of the chaos during Lionel Messi’s programme at Yuva Bharati Krirangan on December 13, West Bengal Sports Minister Arup Biswas has expressed his willingness to step down from his post. He has written a letter to Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee requesting to be relieved of his responsibilities. The letter has surfaced on social media, triggering fresh political ripples in the state.
The event at Yuva Bharati witnessed large-scale disorder, leaving thousands of spectators dissatisfied despite purchasing high-priced tickets. Although present inside the stadium, many failed to even catch a glimpse of Lionel Messi. Allegations surfaced that ministers and very important guests crowded around Messi on the field, effectively blocking the view for ordinary spectators. The incident not only embarrassed the organisers but also dented Kolkata’s image at the national and international levels.
Following the episode, Arup Biswas became the focus of sharp criticism. Several videos and photographs of the sports minister repeatedly appearing alongside Messi went viral on social media. These visuals drew widespread backlash, with both the opposition and members of the public questioning the government’s role and the overall management of the event.
Against this backdrop, a handwritten letter by Arup Biswas addressed to the chief minister has now come into the public domain. However, neither Biswas nor the top leadership of the Trinamool Congress has issued any official statement regarding the letter so far. A senior party leader has, however, made a reference to the letter on social media.
According to sources, there is a strong possibility that the resignation offered by Arup Biswas may be accepted. The state government has been under sustained pressure since the Yuva Bharati incident, and the letter is being viewed as a consequence of that mounting pressure. All eyes are now on Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and her next move on the matter.
