Dhaka, 12 December (H.S.): The health of Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) Chairperson and former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia has deteriorated sharply, with her kidneys ceasing to function entirely while she receives treatment at Evercare Hospital in Dhaka.

The 80-year-old leader, admitted on November 23, now requires elective ventilator support to aid her breathing, as her condition has shown no improvement despite intensive interventions. Medical board head Professor Dr. Shahabuddin Talukdar stated late Thursday that recent tests revealed critically low blood oxygen levels, elevated carbon dioxide, and persistent respiratory distress, necessitating high-flow nasal cannula and BiPAP machine assistance before shifting to ventilator care.

Prof. Talukdar’s update, relayed through BNP media cell member Shairul Kabir Khan, highlighted multiple complications including acute pancreatitis diagnosed on November 27, severe infections treated with advanced antibiotics and antifungals, gastrointestinal bleeding, disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC) requiring blood transfusions, and abnormalities in her aortic valve confirmed via regular echocardiography.

Despite these measures, her fever persists, and she now needs regular dialysis for kidney failure. The medical team, consulting domestic and international experts, urged the public to avoid spreading rumors and affirmed that treatment continues cautiously at the facility where Zia has battled chronic illnesses for years.
