New Delhi, 10 December (H.S.): On the occasion of Human Rights Day, Rajya Sabha Chairman C.P. Radhakrishnan on Wednesday reflected on the global legacy of human rights and reaffirmed India’s commitment to their universal values.
Speaking in the Upper House, Radhakrishnan noted that this year marks the 77th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR), adopted by the United Nations General Assembly in 1948. He described the document as a timeless charter that continues to uphold the principles of dignity, freedom, equality, and justice across the world.
Referring to this year’s global theme, “Human Rights: Our Daily Essentials,” he said the observance serves as a reminder of three fundamental ideas—that human rights are positive, necessary, and universally applicable. “Human rights empower both individuals and society,” he emphasized, adding that they help prevent harm and guide communities toward a more just and inclusive direction.
Radhakrishnan reiterated that India has always been a steadfast supporter of the universal values enshrined in human rights. He underlined the responsibility of public representatives to ensure that these rights become a living reality for every citizen, particularly for those from vulnerable and marginalized sections of society.
On Human Rights Day, he urged a renewed collective commitment to build a nation and a world where every person can live with dignity, equity, and freedom.
