WASHINGTON, 14 November (H.S.): The Trump administration, in a significant expansion of its campaign against far-left movements, on Thursday designated four European-based groups as foreign terrorist organizations.
Secretary of State and National Security Adviser Marco Rubio announced the move, framing it as a fulfillment of the administration's pledge to confront the antifa movement, a term applied to a spectrum of anti-fascist groups. The designations specifically target Antifa Ost in Germany, the International Revolutionary Front (FAI/FRI) in Italy, and two Greek organizations: Armed Proletarian Justice and Revolutionary Class Self-Defense. This action follows a September executive order that labeled antifa as a domestic terrorist organization and is scheduled to formally take effect on November 20 .
The United States will continue using all available tools to protect our nation from these anti-American, anti-capitalist, and anti-Christian terrorist groups, Rubio stated. In a fact sheet, the State Department detailed the evidentiary basis for the classifications.
Antifa Ost is accused of numerous attacks between 2018 and 2023 on individuals it deemed fascists in Germany, as well as a series of attacks in Budapest in February 2023. The department noted that Hungary had already declared Antifa Ost a terrorist organization in September, and President Trump had met with Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán just last week.
The Italian-based FAI/FRI was designated for its history of issuing threats and using letter bombs against political and economic institutions. The State Department highlighted the anarchist group's claims of having affiliates across Europe, South America, and Asia.
Regarding the Greek organizations, Armed Proletarian Justice is described as an anti-capitalist, anarchist group that has attempted and executed attacks with improvised explosive devices (IEDs) against government targets, including a claimed bombing near a riot police headquarters on December 18, 2023.
Its counterpart, Revolutionary Class Self-Defense, claimed responsibility for IED attacks on the Greek Ministry of Labor on February 3, 2024, and the Hellenic Train offices on April 11, 2025.
As a consequence of these sanctions, any assets held by these groups within U.S. jurisdiction are now blocked, and American citizens are legally prohibited from engaging in any transactions with them.
