Siliguri, 03 October (H.S.): The Durga Puja celebrations in Siliguri concluded peacefully this year under strict police surveillance, though nearly 200 people were arrested for various offenses during the four-day festivities from Shashthi to Navami.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Rakesh Singh personally supervised security arrangements, riding on a motorcycle to inspect several pandals. Police officials said those taken into custody faced charges of creating public disorder, drunk driving, and misbehavior with women.
Traffic management also remained a top priority throughout the celebrations. DCP Kazi Shamsuddin Ahmed led night patrols across different parts of the city to ensure smooth movement and safety. On Navami night, Junction Traffic Guard launched a special drive and seized around 20 modified bikes with illegal silencers following complaints from devotees. Owners were penalized accordingly.
Despite the extensive security measures, four road accidents were reported during the festivities, resulting in two fatalities.
