Delhi, 25 October (H.S.): Civil Aviation Minister K. Rammohan Naidu on Saturday inaugurated the renovated Terminal 2 (T2) of Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA). The upgraded terminal, which was closed for renovation in April this year, will become operational from Sunday and is designed to handle 15 million passengers annually.
Speaking at the inauguration, Naidu said India is poised to become one of the world’s largest civil aviation ecosystems, highlighting the need for a more efficient transfer system to transform Delhi airport into a global aviation hub. With optimal space utilization, he said, the airport could reach an annual capacity of 130 million passengers.
The minister also emphasized sustainability initiatives, noting that the Delhi airport is focusing on the use of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) as part of its green transition efforts.
Delhi airport, India’s busiest, currently operates three terminals (T1, T2, and T3) and four runways, managing over 1,300 flight movements daily. It is operated by Delhi International Airport Limited (DIAL).
Videh Kumar Jaipuriar, CEO of DIAL, said the airport’s total annual passenger capacity has now surpassed 100 million. As per DIAL’s earlier data, the expanded T1 can accommodate 40 million passengers, while T3 handles 45 million passengers annually.
The reopening of T2 marks another step in Delhi airport’s ongoing infrastructure modernization drive, aimed at strengthening India’s position as a leading global aviation hub.
