Amritsar Shines with Unity as City Celebrates Bandi Chhor Divas and Diwali

AMRITSAR, 21 October (H.S.): A message of profound Hindu-Sikh unity illuminated Amritsar on Tuesday, as the city immersed itself in dual celebrations. Throngs of devotees gathered at the Harmandir Sahib (Golden Temple) to observe Bandi Chhor Divas, while the Durgiana Temple glittered with the festivities of Diwali.

Despite some confusion over the date, which led to Diwali celebrations in parts of Punjab on Monday, Amritsar maintained its tradition of observing both festivals on the same day. Devotees from across the country and abroad began arriving at the Golden Temple early in the morning, with an estimated 1.5 to 2 lakh people expected to visit throughout the day.

The evening's celebrations will feature the lighting of one lakh ghee lamps and a spectacular fireworks display.Shri Harmandir Sahib's Head Granthi, Giani Raghbir Singh, explained that Bandi Chhor Divas symbolizes freedom and justice.

It commemorates the day the sixth Sikh Guru, Guru Hargobind Sahib, secured the release of 52 kings from captivity in Gwalior Fort and returned to Amritsar. His return was celebrated with the lighting of lamps, a tradition that continues with great fervor each year.

Simultaneously, the Durgiana Temple, a prominent Hindu shrine in the city, was abuzz with Diwali celebrations marking Lord Ram's return to Ayodhya. An estimated 3 lakh devotees were anticipated to visit the temple to offer prayers and participate in the festivities.

The parallel celebrations across the city serve as a powerful emblem of communal harmony and shared cultural heritage.
