New Delhi, 2 January (H.S.): The National Students' Union of India (NSUI) has urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to name a college under the University of Delhi after the late former Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh. In addition, the NSUI has demanded that a Central University be named after Dr. Singh and that his life journey be included in the curriculum.
This comes in response to PM Modi laying the foundation stones for two new campuses of Delhi University, which will have colleges named after Veer Savarkar and late BJP leader Sushma Swaraj. While the Savarkar College is expected to cost Rs 140 crore, the east campus in Surajmal Vihar and west campus in Dwarka are estimated to cost Rs 373 crore and Rs 107 crore, respectively.
In 2021, DU's executive council also approved a proposal to name a college after Sushma Swaraj. The university has invited PM Modi to attend the inauguration and is awaiting confirmation from the Prime Minister's office.
The decision to name colleges after political leaders has sparked debate and controversy, with other names like Swami Vivekananda, Vallabhai Patel, Atal Bihari Vajpayee, and Savitribai Phule being considered for the two upcoming colleges. Land has already been allotted for their establishment in Najafgarh and Fatehpur Beri. The NSUI's request to name a college after Dr. Manmohan Singh is seen as a way to honor his contributions to the nation as a respected economist and former Prime Minister.
