Kolkata, 14 January (H.S.): A sub-inspector (SI) from Rajganj police station in Jalpaiguri has been arrested on charges of rape. The accused officer was taken into custody on Tuesday morning and presented before the Jalpaiguri court. Given the seriousness of the allegations, he had already been relieved of his duties.

According to sources, the complainant, a woman, lodged a case at Siliguri Women’s Police Station last Friday. Since the alleged incident occurred within the Rajganj police station area, a 'Zero FIR' was filed and transferred to the Jalpaiguri Women’s Police Station.

The complaint states that on the night of January 9, around 8:30 PM, the accused SI summoned the woman to his residence, located directly opposite the Rajganj police station, under the pretense of an ongoing investigation. He allegedly raped her at that location. Upon learning of the incident, authorities removed the officer from duty on Sunday, and he was officially arrested on Tuesday. A case has been registered against him under multiple sections of the Indian Penal Code.

Following the arrest, members of a left-wing women's organization staged a protest outside Jalpaiguri Kotwali police station on Monday evening. However, police sources indicate that there are also multiple complaints against the complainant, and the investigation is ongoing.
